Starliner astronauts Suni Williams, Butch Wilmore return to Earth after 9 months in space

Astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Willmore splashed down on Earth after spending nine months in space on Tuesday.

SpaceX crew, with two astronaut alternatives, arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday evening and headed home to run the trip.

Within an hour, the astronauts were leaving the capsule and waving with the camera before being medically checked. The Associated Press reported.

Wilmore and Williams are joined by Nick Hague and Roscosmos astronaut Alexander Golbunov.

NASA was doing it on the ISS because they wanted to overlap between the crew so that they could fill up new astronauts with the work Williams and Wilmore were doing on the ISS.

The mission of sending Williams and Wilmore into space was Boeing's Starliner and company's first mission. In June 2024, we were delayed several times due to thruster failure and helium leaks.

Five of the 28 thrusters went down as Starliner was about to dock into the ISS.

The astronauts weren't meant to be just one week in space, but instead set out on a few months' journey to find out what's wrong with Starliner capsules.

Boeing said he believes the capsule is safe enough to return to Earth with both astronauts, but NASA decided it would stay in space because it was too dangerous.

The capsule eventually made a safe landing in New Mexico in September, but the SpaceX crew was delayed until it was released in March.

Williams and Wilmore's return to Earth envelops a dramatic venture for Boeing and its Starliner. This situation was seen as a blow to the company as it had long served opportunities to participate in the commercial space scene.
