Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister
On June 22, 2026, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation after nearly two years in office.
Starmer shared this news in a statement, indicating he would stay in his role until a new Prime Minister is appointed. In the UK, it’s typical for the ruling party in Parliament to suggest the next leader.
He is the sixth prime minister to serve in Europe in the last decade. Starmer noted that his center-left Labor Party does not see the current Prime Minister as the best option for the upcoming general election.
Nevertheless, Starmer maintained that his time in office had seen economic advancements, stating that his successor would inherit a stronger country compared to what he received.
Interestingly, Donald Trump, the former U.S. President, anticipated Starmer’s resignation and critiqued him on key issues like immigration and energy, suggesting the opening of North Sea oil fields. “I wish him the best!” Trump remarked.
Starmer and Trump have had disagreements recently, particularly about the UK’s support regarding the Iran conflict and access through the Strait of Hormuz.
Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham MP is seen as the leading candidate to succeed Starmer.
