Mason Marchment of the Dallas Stars found himself in a bit of a sticky situation on Sunday during the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Winnipeg Jets. He faced a hard hit near the blue line from Jets Center Mark Scheifele in the second period. No penalty was called, which seemed to frustrate Marchment. After getting back up, he expressed his annoyance—likely to the referee Graham—before he made a rather impulsive swing at the referee’s shins with his stick.
Interestingly, while there was no penalty handed to Marchment for his actions, it’s worth noting that he might not face any further punishment. According to a report from SportsNet, officials indicated that decisions regarding abuse of officials typically rely on what happens during the game.
The Stars managed to secure a 5-2 victory over the Jets in Game 3, which gave them a 2-1 series lead. Mikko Rantanen stood out, contributing significantly with two goals and two assists during the game.
A notable moment from the match was Alexander Petrovich’s controversial goal, where initial reactions suggested it could have been a kicking play. However, after a lengthy review, officials ruled that the Jets’ goaltender Connor Hellebuyck had inadvertently pushed the puck into his own net, which led to the goal being upheld.
Marchment, who tallied 22 goals in the regular season, has yet to find the net since Game 5 in the first round against the Colorado Avalanche, which is quite a drought given his earlier performance.
Reflecting on the game’s intensity, Jets player Kyle Connor expressed a sense of disbelief: “I don’t think the game had escaped us. We were right there.” His words encapsulate the frustration felt by Winnipeg, keen to capitalize on any opportunity that might have slipped through their fingers.
