SpaceX’s Starship Achieves Orbital Milestone
On Monday, SpaceX’s Starship successfully reached orbit for the first time, delivering a new batch of advanced Starlink satellites before making a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.
The vehicle, which combines the spacecraft’s upper stage with the Super Heavy booster rocket, launched from Texas. Once the upper stage was in space, the Super Heavy made a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.
After entering orbit, Starship deployed over two dozen Starlink V3 satellites, touted for their enhanced capacity, data density, and power, all improvements over the many existing Starlink satellites already in orbit.
While initially planned to be a 10-hour mission, Starship completed its journey in about three hours, reentering the atmosphere before touching down in the Pacific.
This launch was a significant milestone as it marks the first successful orbital flight for Starship, differing from previous tests that were confined to suborbital flights.
“By going to orbit, the next phase of developing Starship to be fully and rapidly reusable can begin,” SpaceX noted.
The Starship system aims to be fully reusable and has ambitious goals for transporting both crew and cargo to various destinations, including Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars. With a height exceeding 400 feet, it’s described as “the world’s most powerful launch vehicle,” capable of carrying over 100 metric tons.
SpaceX also pointed out that the future of Starship involves collaborations with NASA, focusing on advancing space exploration and innovation.
“As the most powerful launch system ever developed, Starship will be able to carry up to 100 people on long-duration, interplanetary flights,” the company stated. They added that it will facilitate satellite delivery, the creation of a Moon base, and even point-to-point transport on Earth.
Nasa Administrator Jared Isaacman took to social media to express his congratulations on the successful mission.
“Congrats [SpaceX]! Gorgeous launch, getting Ship to orbit and managing every step in a safe, responsible, and especially inspirational way,” Isaacman remarked. “[NASA], along with the rest of the interested public, is excited to help where we can and for Starship missions to become routine!”
