EJ Antoni, public finance economist at the Heritage Foundation, joins The Bottom Line to discuss April’s jobs report and labor force participation rate, which came in below economists’ expectations.
Labor shortages in the US are still leaving many people shouldering extra burdens and working menial jobs, but how happy employees feel at the end of the day can vary greatly depending on what they do and even where they live.
This is according to workforce platform Deputy’s latest Shift Pulse report, which asked workers in industries including healthcare, retail and hospitality for feedback on how they’re feeling about the shift on a sliding scale from “stressful” to “great.”

After analysing 431,000 responses, we found that these states have the happiest workers in the US:
1. Oregon
Oregon took the top spot with 75% of respondents saying they felt “excellent,” the highest percentage of any state.
There is a high demand for skilled workers and these jobs are among the highest paying.
2. North Carolina

The Tar Heel State ranked second in the study, with 70 percent of workers North Carolina He said he felt great at the end of his shift.

3. Virginia
Coming in third was Virginia, where 66% of employees surveyed said they felt great at the end of the day.
4. Connecticut

Connecticut came in at the top fourth with 60% of frontline workers rated how they felt at the end of their shift as “great.”
Which states have the most unhappy employees?
Deputy’s findings also showed wide disparities in how workers felt at the end of the day in Connecticut. Constitutional State Frontline workers were also the most stressed, with 20% saying they felt “stressed” and a further 20% saying they felt frustrated at the end of their shift.

Indiana had the second highest level of worker dissatisfaction, with 34% saying they were stressed or unhappy, followed by Oklahoma, where 19% of workers said they were stressed at work and 8% said they were unhappy at work.
