'Stay Quiet': Hakeem Jeffries Clashes with House Republican About Government Shutdown

Verbal Clash in New York Over Government Shutdown

On Wednesday afternoon, a heated exchange transpired between two New Yorkers regarding the ongoing government shutdown and the Democrats’ refusal to reopen government offices.

Republican Rep. Mike Lawler confronted Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries outside a Democratic press conference. Jeffries, who had been vocal about Republican reluctance to discuss the shutdown, found himself on the defensive when Lawler expressed his readiness to debate. However, Jeffries responded by telling Lawler to “keep his mouth shut.”

“You didn’t want all the Republicans here?” Lawler asked. “I’m here.” He further remarked, “I voted for a clean CR to keep government open and funded. You voted to shut it down.”

In response, Jeffries criticized Lawler, suggesting he was merely seeking a viral moment and pointed to Lawler’s support of President Donald Trump’s legislation, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. He aggressively gestured during their confrontation, even accusing Lawler of seeking influence due to fears about re-election.

“You’re not going to talk to me or about me because you don’t want to hear what I have to say,” Jeffries added, insisting Lawler should keep quiet.

Almost all House Democrats had previously voted against a bipartisan spending bill designed to prevent the government shutdown in September. Recently, Jeffries has been pushing for negotiations with Republicans to include $1.5 trillion in unrelated policy issues in the funding package. However, Republican Chairman Mike Johnson has firmly stated that discussions won’t occur until the government is reopened.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats rejected a House-passed funding bill for the sixth time on the same afternoon, signaling continued stalemate.

Lawler didn’t stop there. He also criticized Jeffries for his detachment from the New York mayoral primary. With the election approaching, Jeffries has avoided endorsing the socialist Democratic candidate, Zoran Mamdani, 35.

“When will you support him?” Lawler pressed. “Do you support him as a mayoral candidate?”

Jeffries dismissed Lawler’s inquiry, asserting, “I won’t answer you. You’re not even answering yourself. I’ll address what needs to be addressed about the mayoral race.”

Lawler’s questions about Mamdani’s previous comments regarding the recent terrorist attack went unanswered, prompting Lawler to remark, “That’s sad.”

Mamdani is anticipated to win the upcoming mayoral election in November. Despite several New York Democratic leaders endorsing him in recent weeks, both Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have yet to offer their support.
