The city of Portland is building stainless steel barricades and forming a new crowd control police force to protect against violent political protests ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The city has nearly completed construction of seven large, hinged barricades that can be dropped in front of the west entrance to the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse, the Portland Tribune reported. After the death of George Floyd in May 2020, the site faced months of massive protests and sometimes violent riots.

“These measures are a first step towards strengthening the facility, and are in line with more significant measures to redesign and renovate the entrance, surrounding spaces and internal public spaces, which will require more funding and take longer to complete. By comparison, it can be implemented relatively quickly,” the U.S. court said. the office wrote in the report.

Additionally, the Portland City Council on Wednesday approved the creation of a new PPB Crowd Control Unit. Team members who respond to protests and other “public order operations” will receive a 6% pay increase, costing them an additional $380,000 a year.

The new unit is a former rapid response team whose approximately 50 members resigned in June 2021 after one of its members was charged with assault for allegedly hitting a protester in the head with a baton in August 2020. It replaces.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said creating a new “security team” within PPB is “essential” for Portland as it enters election season.
