Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns Raise Concerns Over Turf at Acreisure Stadium
The playing field at Acreisure Stadium has drawn criticism, not just from Cleveland Browns players but also from some members of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both teams aired their grievances regarding the turf following their matchup last Sunday.
Reportedly, players from both sides expressed their “outrage” to the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) over the “embarrassing” condition of the field at the stadium in Pittsburgh. A source indicated earlier this week that the NFLPA has communicated these concerns to the league to prevent such issues in the future.
Steelers offensive lineman Broderick Jones specifically pointed out that dry conditions made it challenging to execute explosive moves without “kicking up clumps of grass.”
There was a noticeable incident during the game when Steelers placekicker Chris Boswell slipped while attempting a field goal, prompting him to kick at the ground in frustration.
Despite plans to replace the field after the game, players felt compelled to voice their opinions. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin commented on Monday that the field’s state was subpar, acknowledging concerns he had during the game and noting that while the grass will eventually be replaced, the issues from Sunday were still a concern.
Defensive captain Cameron Heyward offered a more pointed critique, stating, “Honestly, it sucked.” He added that he felt a sense of loss for a teammate due to an injury sustained on the field.
Heyward was referencing special teams captain Myles Killebrew, who suffered a non-contact knee injury after landing awkwardly on the turf during the game. He emphasized a preference for natural grass, stating, “I like grass, but that wasn’t grass for playing.”
The NFL maintains that injury rates are similar on both grass and artificial turf, though players like Heyward consistently advocate for grass when given a choice. The Steelers share the stadium with the University of Pittsburgh’s football team, but neither team had played on the field the week prior, leading to only one home game before Sunday.
Moving forward, the Steelers are mindful of their playing surface as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football, followed by a home game against the Green Bay Packers on October 26.
