Steelers Might Be Without Derrick Harmon in Week One
The Steelers could be missing a key player in their season opener.
Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon was carted off the field during Thursday’s preseason win against the Panthers due to a knee sprain.
It looks like he might be sidelined for several weeks. A more precise evaluation is expected after an MRI scheduled for Friday.
Coach Mike Tomlin mentioned post-game, “He’s been appreciated,” following their 19-10 victory.
During the second quarter, Harmon got hurt while trying to evade an offensive lineman during a pass rush and it seems he injured himself while landing.
After the injury, he left the field with a towel draped over his head, which is a classic move for any player dealing with an injury.
On a positive note, he was seen later smiling on the sidelines, which might suggest things aren’t as grim as they could be.
With the season opener against the Jets just 16 days away, if the initial timeline holds, there’s a chance Harmon could recover in time.
Though the MRI results are crucial, Tomlin appeared unconcerned when asked about the possibility of serious ligament damage.
Selected as the 21st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Harmon is seen as part of a bolstered defensive line alongside stars like TJ Watt and Cam Hayward.
ESPN notes that Harmon is the anticipated starter, possibly taking over for Hayward, who might be seeking a new contract.
Steelers assistant general manager Andy Wydle praised Harmon, saying, “I think he had a really good camp. His explosiveness and the energy he brings are a big part of why we drafted him.” So, it seems there’s hope for his quick return.
The Steelers are currently favorites against the Jets in what will be Aaron Rodgers’ first game at Metlife Stadium after a couple of rocky seasons.
