McCarthy Reflects on Heated Exchange with Rodgers
Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged his disappointment in himself for losing his temper and using profanity during a tense moment with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which was picked up on a hot mic during the team’s 27-24 loss to the Browns in Week 4.
During a press conference on Monday, McCarthy mentioned he spoke with Rodgers over the weekend to clear the air. “I wouldn’t say it’s typical, no. But, you know, there’s a 20-year relationship there. We had multiple conversations over the weekend, not only about that incident but other topics too,” he explained as Pittsburgh prepared for their upcoming game against the Colts in Week 5.
He added, “Not to put pressure on my daughter, but I’m reaching grandparent age. I’d rather not use those kinds of words. It’s a highly emotional and competitive atmosphere—still, I believe it’s a chance for us to learn.”
Rodgers expressed frustration in the first quarter while waiting for a play call from McCarthy. A microphone caught him exclaiming, “What the f–k? Call it!” directed at McCarthy, to which McCarthy responded with another expletive.
Commentators Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit reacted to the exchange during the broadcast, with Michaels noting, “He’s not happy.” He also recalled a similar moment in Week 3 when Rodgers appeared to be frustrated on the sidelines, although the Steelers managed to win that game against the Bengals, 30-27.
Initially, McCarthy seemed puzzled when asked about the incident post-game, as he was informed by a Steelers PR director that the exchange had been captured on camera.
Interestingly, Rodgers did not address the incident when questioned later.
In the loss to the Browns, the four-time NFL MVP, now in his 22nd and final season, completed 22 of 40 passes for 299 yards, scoring three touchdowns but also throwing two interceptions. McCarthy previously coached Rodgers with the Packers from 2006 to 2018, and they celebrated a Super Bowl victory together during the 2010 season against the Steelers.
Despite the heated moment, the bond between McCarthy and Rodgers remains strong, with Rodgers citing McCarthy as a significant reason for his decision to join the Steelers in June 2025.
As Pittsburgh, currently at 2-2, prepares to face the 2-2 Colts, they will be looking to find their rhythm in the AFC showdown scheduled for Sunday at 1 PM ET.
