The Steelers are hoping to clarify Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team “within the next month or so.” This comes from owner Art Rooney II, who shared that Rodgers is still considering the possibility of playing another season in Pittsburgh.
At 42, Rodgers hasn’t given any clear signals about his intentions for next season. The recent hire of Mike McCarthy as the Steelers’ head coach has added another layer of uncertainty about whether Rodgers, who McCarthy previously coached in Green Bay, would want to continue playing.
“We’re in the dark about Aaron’s plans right now,” Rooney mentioned regarding Rodgers’ influence in the choice of McCarthy. “But that really didn’t play a part in the decision.”
Rooney also expressed the need to evaluate Rodgers’ situation as they move forward, acknowledging, “We’ll have to see how everything aligns, but this choice was made with Mike as the coach we wanted and wasn’t heavily influenced by the chance of Aaron returning.”
He believes McCarthy could make the most of developing Will Howard, picked in the sixth round of the 2025 draft, mentioning his potential. While he also noted Mason Rudolph, he reiterated the importance of discussing Rodgers’ status if he decides to come back and if it all fits together.
Earlier this month, some reports suggested that the Steelers weren’t anticipating Rodgers’ return after the exit of former coach Mike Tomlin. It can’t be ruled out that Rodgers might choose to retire completely instead of leaving Pittsburgh.
After the Steelers’ postseason exit against the Texans, Rodgers avoided discussing future plans. “I won’t rush into an emotional decision,” he said. “This year has been incredibly enjoyable, despite its challenges. Reflecting on last year, it was one of the best of my life, and being part of this team is a highlight. It’s tough to face the end of the season.”
