Mike Wagner, Steelers Legend, Passes Away at 76

Mike Wagner, who played as a defensive back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was part of four Super Bowl victories, has died at the age of 76. The Steelers announced his passing in a statement on Wednesday night.

In the words of Steelers owner Art Rooney II, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Wagner, a great player and an integral part of some of the most successful teams in Pittsburgh Steelers history.”

The cause of death has not been revealed.

Wagner was a notable two-time Pro Bowler during his decade-long career with the Steelers, where he recorded 36 interceptions and five forced fumbles between 1971 and 1980. Drafted 268th overall in the 1971 NFL Draft, he was initially an 11th round pick.

He played a crucial role in the Steelers’ success during the 1970s. Rooney emphasized Wagner’s toughness and consistency, saying, “His contributions on the field were significant, but his steady presence and team-first mentality were what truly defined him.” Rooney further extended condolences to Wagner’s family, noting he would always be remembered as a champion and valued teammate.

Wagner’s journey to the NFL Draft was rather unique. Attending Western Illinois University, he had initially shown little interest in competing. It wasn’t until he asked the head coach for a tryout that he joined the football team. Even then, it appears he had to wait for his opportunity while working his way through the ranks.

The Steelers spotted him and, despite the challenges of being a late-round pick, he soon became a starting safety, stepping up when others were injured—and he never looked back. Wagner started 116 of his 119 career games, leading the league with eight interceptions in 1973.

These interceptions included a game-winning one against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IX that marked the Steelers’ first championship win.

In 2020, Wagner was honored by being inducted into the Steelers Hall of Fame, where he remained a beloved figure in the organization until his death.
