Steelers take unusual step with Aaron Rodgers while awaiting his choice

Steelers Await Decision from Aaron Rodgers

In a pivotal move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have placed a first-right-of-refusal bid on quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who noted that such actions are rather rare in the league.

If Rodgers signs with another team, the Steelers would have the option to match that offer. However, if he does agree to terms, it would involve a 10% salary increase from his previous contract, which would set his one-year deal around $15 million. It’s important to mention that he can only officially sign with the Steelers once training camp starts.

The Steelers have been biding their time, waiting for the 42-year-old, who guided them to the playoffs last season, to finalize his plans for the upcoming season. Interestingly, they did not acquire any established quarterbacks during free agency, seemingly banking on Rodgers’ return.

In the recent NFL Draft, Pittsburgh selected Drew Allard from Penn State in the third round. This decision places him in competition with both Will Howard and Mason Rudolph for the starting quarterback spot. Howard, last year’s sixth-round pick, remained on the bench all season behind Rodgers and Rudolph.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II mentioned on the DVE Morning Show before the draft that discussions with Rodgers were ongoing. “I wish I could say everything is wrapped up, but we’re still in talks,” he shared. He expressed optimism, saying they had an idea of Rodgers’ schedule and expected to have clarity soon.

Meanwhile, there’s a notable transition happening. Mike McCarthy has stepped in as head coach, taking over from Mike Tomlin, who spent 19 seasons with the Steelers. Interestingly, Tomlin has publicly predicted that Rodgers will end up returning to the team.

“Over the year I spent with him, he really became passionate about football again,” Tomlin commented about Rodgers’ engagement with the sport and his teammates. “He enjoys both the game and the whole process of it. I truly believe he’s still got what it takes to play.”
