Stefanik and Langworthy Introduce Parole Bill to Address Sanctuary Loopholes for Foreign Criminals

Legislation Introduced to Address Border Security Concerns

House Republican Conference members, including Elise Stefanik and Nick Langworthy from New York, have put forward a new bill aimed at restricting the entry of terrorists and high-risk individuals into the country. They argue that this is necessary due to issues stemming from what they describe as President Biden’s Open Border Agenda, according to Breitbart News.

The proposed legislation, titled Protecting America from the risk of extremists under border laws (safer), responds to claims that New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s sanctuary policies are enabling certain illegal immigrants to evade detection at the northern and southern borders.

Stefanik criticized Hochul, stating, “New York’s worst governor has backed Biden’s detrimental open border policy.” She expressed concern that this puts all New Yorkers in jeopardy as it prioritizes unsafe individuals over the well-being of residents.

She further elaborated, “I’m announcing that I’m working alongside Rep. Nick Langworthy to uphold laws that prevent these dangerous offenders from affecting the streets of New York and beyond. Our legislation aims to seal the gaps in Hochul’s ineffective policies, which have allowed criminals and terrorists to infiltrate our state.”

Langworthy echoed these sentiments, mentioning the rising number of illegal immigrants in his district. “My constituents are fed up with the influx of dangerous individuals and criminals because of the administration’s reckless policies,” he stated. “A nation without a secure border cannot thrive, and we must take bold steps to rectify the turmoil of recent years.”

The legislation proposes several measures:

  • Block high-risk alien parole: This measure seeks to exclude immigrant parole for known terrorists and members of criminal organizations.
  • Ending refugee parole loopholes: It aims to prohibit the use of parole for refugees not part of established U.S. programs.
  • Protecting national security: This includes barring entry to individuals connected to terrorism, espionage, or foreign crime syndicates.

New York has become a focal point for concerns about national security linked to border issues, emerging as a significant center for foreign criminal activities.

In March 2024, Baselbassel Ebbadi, a foreign national trained by Hezbollah, was apprehended. Reports indicated he planned to cross the U.S. border illegally and carry out an attack. He is currently undergoing deportation proceedings.

The Swanton sector, part of New York’s 21st Congressional District, has also witnessed an increase in border encounters, including individuals on the U.S. terrorist watch list.

Previously, Langworthy supported the Safe Bill under the Border Act, which aligns with a Senate bill introduced by Sen. Steve Daines in July 2024. With the Republican majority in Congress, the legislators believe their current proposal has a better chance of passing compared to earlier efforts.
