Elise Stefanik Launches Gubernatorial Campaign in New York

On Friday, Rep. Elise Stefanik from New York announced her candidacy for governor, aiming to transform the state into one that is both “affordable and safe.” She intends to challenge Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the 2026 election.

“Kathy Hochul is the worst governor in America,” Stefanik asserted during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.” She criticized the state for being the most expensive in the country while also burdened by high taxes and utility costs.

Stefanik’s entry into the race signifies a significant shift in the upcoming 2026 election. Her initial campaign platform emphasizes key issues like crime, taxes, and overall affordability in New York.

In response to this, Hochul has made it clear that she plans to seek re-election, although a formal announcement hasn’t been issued yet. She branded Stefanik as “a disaster for New York” and sarcastically remarked, “Our campaign’s message to the Trump campaign’s No. 1 cheerleader? Do it…”

Representing a conservative district in upstate New York, Stefanik has consistently criticized the state’s Democratic leadership. Recently, she aimed her remarks at newly elected New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist. “We saw a furious anti-Semite, pro-Hamas communist who wanted to raise taxes,” she claimed. “And frankly, he barely won a majority of voters in New York City.”

Stefanik also criticized Hochul for supporting Mamdani, suggesting she failed to meet the expectations of New Yorkers.

Since becoming New York’s first female governor in 2021, Hochul took office following the resignation of Andrew Cuomo amid sexual harassment allegations. She successfully won a full term against Republican challenger Lee Zeldin in 2022.

The 2026 gubernatorial race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the country.
