Elise Stefanik Critiques Hochul and Backs Zoran Mamdani
Representative Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) has slammed New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul, calling her the “worst” in the country. This comes as lawmakers rally behind Zoran Mamdani, the Democratic mayoral candidate from New York City.
During an appearance on Fox News’ Fox and Friends, Stefanik criticized Hochul, stating, “It was only a matter of time before he bends his knees for this fierce anti-Semite communist. The reality is that Kathy Hochul essentially owns Zoran Mamdani, pushing to reimburse police, abolish law enforcement, eliminate prisons, get rid of private health insurance, and decriminalize sex work.”
Hochul formally endorsed Mamdani, making the announcement in the New York Times, confirming his bid to be the next mayor just two months ahead of the upcoming mayoral election.
In their discussions, leaders emphasized the need for safe neighborhoods and opportunities for families across New York. “We need leaders willing to set aside differences and stand up against Trump,” they highlighted.
Stefanik’s critiques target Hochul as she anticipates potential challenges for the governor’s position in the next election cycle. Reports from June indicated that she might enter the race. According to one source:
Mamdani previously won the Democratic primary this summer with a campaign aimed at taxing New York’s wealthiest and establishing a City-run grocery store.
This support arrives at a crucial point in the Democratic mayoral race, which has seen limited enthusiasm among left-leaning voters. Currently, Mamdani leads the polls, with 46% considering him the likely next mayor, while former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo trails at 24%.
On Saturday, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) also endorsed Mamdani, urging fellow Democratic leaders to follow suit. He criticized those who have hesitated to support Mamdani, noting that Trump has benefitted from discord within the party.
Mamdani expressed his gratitude for Hochul’s support, emphasizing a collective goal to unify the party and tackle Trump while focusing on making New York more affordable.
