Governor Hochul Struggles with Key Cases During Legislative Hearing

During a recent legislative hearing, New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced scrutiny regarding her knowledge of high-profile cases involving illegal immigrants charged with violent crimes. The session took place at a House Oversight Committee hearing, where Representative Elise Stefanik criticized Hochul for continuing a sanctuary state policy previously established by her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo.

This policy prohibits state officials from sharing information with federal immigration authorities for enforcement purposes, essentially preventing law enforcement from detaining individuals based solely on their immigration status.

Stefanik, pressing the governor, asked about notorious incidents, but Hochul appeared uninformed. For instance, when asked about Sebastian Zapetta Khalil, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala accused of seriously injuring a woman on a subway, Hochul admitted to not recognizing the name. Khalil had previously been deported and was noted for setting a homeless woman on fire.

“Do you know who Sebastian Zapetta Khalil is?” Stefanik questioned, but Hochul replied, “I’m sure you’re going to tell me. There are many cases…”

Stefanik then pointed out, “These are infamous cases. New Yorkers know about them; you should too.” Frustrated, she reminded Hochul about the specifics: Khalil had attacked a sleeping woman, igniting significant public outrage.

Hochul conceded, “I’m not familiar at this point.” Stefanik pressed on, stating, “This is a direct result of your sanctuary state policies.”

Stefanik continued challenging Hochul, mentioning another case involving Sakir Akkan, a 21-year-old illegal immigrant from Turkey who had raped a 15-year-old girl. Despite the widespread media coverage, Hochul struggled to recall the details and attempted to divert the conversation.

“He’s an illegal immigrant in New York,” Stefanik insisted, describing how Akkan had threatened and assaulted the girl in Albany.

Hochul was also asked about Raymond Rojas Basilio, a previously deported Mexican national convicted of abusing an underage victim. Despite the gravity of the situation, Hochul again seemed unprepared to address the implications of the sanctuary policy in relation to such crimes.

Stefanik challenged Hochul, claiming that such policies allowed serious offenses to occur without accountability. “You’re protecting illegals,” she asserted, emphasizing the need for prioritizing New Yorkers’ safety over shielding undocumented immigrants.

The governor, acknowledging the severity of these incidents, maintained that New York was cooperating with federal authorities on criminal matters. However, she criticized Stefanik for attempting to turn the hearing into a sensational moment.

In a heated exchange, Stefanik emphasized, “These are horrible crimes committed under your watch,” urging for a reevaluation of the sanctuary policies that she argued put New Yorkers at risk. Hochul, defending her stance, continued to assert that she was working alongside federal law enforcement to address these issues.
