Elise Stefanik Launches New York Gubernatorial Campaign

U.S. Representative Elise Stefanik is set to announce her long-anticipated campaign for governor of New York on Friday. She plans to run against Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in the 2026 election, according to multiple sources.

Stefanik, a prominent Republican in the House and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, represents a conservative area in upstate New York and has been eyeing a gubernatorial bid for several months. “It’s almost here. People are so excited,” she remarked during an interview on Fox News’ “The Martha McCallum Story.”

She noted, “There’s been an outpouring of support from Republicans, Democrats, and independents across our great state. Many former supporters of Kathy Hochul are now backing me.”

Stefanik has frequently criticized Hochul, labeling her as “the worst governor in America.” Recently, she specifically targeted Hochul for her endorsement of Zoran Mamdani, who just became the mayor of New York City.

“People are tired of weak, common-sense leadership that raises taxes, defunds police, and allows this radical agenda to take hold in New York City with someone like Mamdani, who’s an anti-Semitic socialist,” Stefanik commented, connecting Hochul with the newly elected progressive mayor.

Stefanik’s relationship with Trump is noteworthy; she once criticized him but has since become one of his strongest defenders in Congress.

It’s been over 20 years since a Republican won a gubernatorial election in New York, the last being George Pataki in 2002. This raises the question: Can Stefanik break the Republican losing streak in this critical state?

Hochul could be in for a difficult re-election. After ascending to the governorship in 2021 when Andrew Cuomo resigned amid controversies, Hochul narrowly defeated then-Representative Lee Zeldin in 2022, marking his best performance for a Republican gubernatorial candidate since Pataki’s last term.

Despite losing New York by a significant margin in 2020, Trump managed to close the gap by 10 points in the recent November election.

Hochul, described as a moderate Democrat from Buffalo, faces an unusual primary challenge from Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, something that’s rarely seen for a sitting lieutenant governor.

Stefanik plans to center her campaign around affordability issues. “People are increasingly concerned about how expensive everything is, and I have a strong track record of supporting family-friendly services,” she stated. She attributed New York’s high costs to Hochul’s leadership, claiming, “We have the highest taxes, utility prices, and constantly rising rents.”

This week, Democrats scored notable wins in New Jersey and Virginia, emphasizing affordability as a critical concern. Stefanik suggested that these results highlight the need for Republicans to present a clear economic vision. “We need to implement policies that make our state affordable again,” she asserted.

Critics, however, have accused her of merely echoing Trump’s unpopular agenda, damaging the lives of New York voters. “Stefanik’s history of supporting healthcare cuts and rising tariffs could be detrimental,” stated Kevin Donohoe of the Democratic Governors Association.

Earlier this year, Congressman Mike Lawler considered entering the governor race but opted for re-election instead.

Stefanik has begun building a campaign team, including Tony Fabrizio, a well-regarded Republican pollster from Trump’s 2024 campaign. It’s unclear, however, if she will secure the party’s nomination.

Additionally, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, another Trump supporter, is reportedly contemplating a run for governor, adding another layer of complexity to the Republican primary.
