Stefany Shaheen Wins Democratic Primary in New Hampshire
Stefany Shaheen, daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, secured a win in the Democratic primary early Wednesday in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District. This particular race has drawn significant attention, with multiple Democratic candidates in the mix.
Her success sets the stage for a pivotal contest that Democrats hope will help them regain control of the House of Representatives, especially with the district’s current representative, Chris Pappas, seeking a Senate seat.
Pappas has held his position since 2019 and made his Senate ambitions known last year.
“I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them; I’m proud of what we have accomplished together and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate,” he stated in a recent press release.
Incumbents like Pappas typically enhance their party’s chances in competitive areas. He last secured reelection with a solid 54.0% to 45.9% win against Republican Russell Prescott, a local lawmaker.
The primary attracted a range of Democratic hopefuls eager to step into the open seat left by Pappas. Besides Shaheen, there were eight other candidates, including Maura Sullivan, who is a Marine veteran and previously served in the Obama administration. Other notable competitors included Carleigh Beriont, a union organizer with progressive roots, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer and international law attorney. Urrutia later withdrew from the race and endorsed Shaheen, who quickly emerged as a leading contender.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who announced her retirement in March, has publicly backed her daughter’s campaign. “I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in,” she remarked, emphasizing Stefany’s commitment to local issues such as affordable healthcare and environmental concerns.
Shaheen mentioned her focus areas like expanding Medicare options, increasing tax breaks for first-time homebuyers, and reforming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Sullivan has also been vocal about her own credentials, portraying herself as a seasoned veteran. On her campaign platform, she noted her military background and her time in the Obama administration, working on national security and healthcare initiatives.
Her agenda includes addressing price gouging, strengthening the Veterans Affairs system, opposing certain tariffs, and advocating for increased federal housing investments.
With the primary behind her, Shaheen looks forward to the general election, which is set for November 3.
