SAN FRANCISCO — Injury Concerns for Stephen Curry
Stephen Curry had to leave the bench late in the game due to an injury. The Golden State Warriors ended up losing to the Houston Rockets, 104-100. Curry is now set to be traded to the Rockets after suffering a bruise to his right quadriceps.
Next steps include an MRI to assess the injury’s severity.
With the possibility of Curry being sidelined for a significant time, the Warriors have some rebuilding to do.
Coach Steve Kerr shared his thoughts, noting how much the team dynamics will shift. “Obviously everything changes, our rotation, the way we play, who we play, so we’ll see,” he remarked. When he found out it was just a quadriceps issue, he felt some relief; it was better than a potential ankle or knee problem. “I hope he recovers quickly and is okay. But we have to hold down the fort,” he added.
In a pivotal moment with 3:24 left on the clock, Curry went hard against Rockets guard Amen Thompson under the basket. Thompson’s drive could’ve tied the game, but a whistle blew for an offensive foul. Houston challenged the call, yet it was overturned due to Curry’s block.
After that play, Kerr noticed Curry looked unwell. Despite his struggles, Curry managed to tally 14 points on 4-of-13 shooting, along with two three-pointers, seven rebounds, and five assists. However, he also contributed to the team’s 16 turnovers.
Rookie Will Richard acknowledged the difficulty ahead: “If Steph is out, everyone else has to improve their game a lot to fill that void.”
Adding to the team’s woes, guard Gary Payton II sprained his left ankle, limiting his play to just under five minutes.
Jimmy Butler expressed disappointment over the Warriors’ adherence to their game plan. He emphasized the need for everyone to focus more on the details, especially in Curry’s absence. “What’s going to change the most? I think we have to be close to perfect,” he said. “Even with him on the floor, we’re making the game tough. He’s a great player, but relying on him to save us every night isn’t why he’s here.”
