Life Sentences for Madeline Soto’s Murderer
Stephan Stearns, the man convicted of the heinous crime against 13-year-old Madeline Soto, received 21 life sentences, all to be served concurrently. This decision came about as part of a plea deal that spared him from facing the death penalty.
At a hearing in Florida just before his trial commenced, Stearns, who is the boyfriend of Madeline’s mother, Jenn Soto, opted not to contest the charges against him. This decision allowed prosecutors to drop the death penalty charges related to a series of abuses that tragically began when Madeline was just 11.
Tyler Wallace, Madeline’s grieving father, expressed his outrage, stating, “I can’t grasp your selfishness, the deplorable thing about your actions.” Tears flowed as he confronted his daughter’s murderer in court.
In a heartfelt statement, he added, “You’re falling down, you’re weak, you’re a coward. It won’t heal over time.”
Madeline was reported missing last February, following her absence from school the day after her 13th birthday. Her body was discovered abandoned in a wooded area six days later, with the autopsy confirming she had been strangled.
Two days after her disappearance, Stearns was arrested after investigators found “intrusive images” of Madeline on his phone, which led to suspicions of prolonged abuse starting in 2022.
Initially pleading not guilty, Stearns’ eventual agreement to the sentences meant the trial’s grisly details would remain undisclosed.
State Attorney Monique Worrell stated, “We cannot bring Madeline back, but we hope her family finds some peace knowing justice has been served.” She emphasized that Stearns would spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of appeal, thus avoiding prolonging the trauma for the family.
