ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith criticized Senator Alex Padilla on Friday after lawmakers interrupted a press conference held by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Smith questioned Padilla’s behavior, asking, “Can Kristi Noem speak? Did she wait for you to ask her questions and scream out your questions?” He added, “You’re a senator, right? You couldn’t wait? So you lost it, so it was just you.”
Following the incident, the Department of Homeland Security supported Smith’s remarks. They addressed the criticism from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass regarding Padilla’s actions at the press conference, stating, “Senator Padilla chose a rude political theatre.” The DHS noted that Padilla had not identified himself or displayed a Senate security pin, causing confusion during the event. They also mentioned that Secretary Noem did meet with Padilla afterward for a brief discussion.
Smith argued that instead of causing incidents like this, we should consider leaders like Maryland’s governor or Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, suggesting they handle themselves without resorting to chaos. “It’s all nonsense. It’s all used as a tool to divide us,” he remarked.
Padilla, who made history as the first Latinx senator from California, expressed frustration over being forcibly removed from the press conference. His office claimed that he was preparing to ask Noem questions when federal agents intervened.
In the aftermath, various Democrats condemned the enforcement tactics used against Padilla, and some called for Noem’s resignation. The incident sparked further debate among lawmakers, with Republican colleagues suggesting that Padilla’s actions contributed to the messy scenario.
