Stephen A. Smith Commends Trump on Peace Efforts
ESPN host Stephen A. Smith recently expressed support for President Donald Trump’s involvement in negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity,” Smith suggested that Trump is working within the same framework many administrations have pursued to achieve global peace.
During the interview, Smith mentioned, “He is attempting to do what nearly every administration aspires to regarding ending wars worldwide. His political capital, though, isn’t particularly high from this.” He offered a nuanced view, noting that while Trump might not gain much from these efforts, it’s important to recognize and acknowledge his engagement in the process.
In a related development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt during a press conference, where she also indicated that a trilateral meeting involving the U.S. might occur if needed following discussions with both leaders.
Leavitt stated that “President Trump spoke with Putin, and an agreement to meet was reached as part of the next phase of peace talks.” She added that they would “consider a trilateral meeting if necessary.” This announcement follows a recent summit where Zelensky and several European leaders convened to address outcomes from high-stakes discussions with Putin in Alaska. Leavitt highlighted the praise Trump received from European leaders during these meetings.
After their meeting, Putin remarked that had Trump been in power, Russia might not have initiated its invasion of Ukraine, a claim he reiterated. Smith has hinted at the possibility of running for president as a Democrat in 2028 and has not hesitated to openly defend Trump, particularly when facing criticism regarding the origins of the war.
In his comments, Smith shifted some of the blame away from Trump, suggesting former Presidents Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton also share responsibility for tensions in the region during their terms. He stated, “Let’s not pretend that Trump solely caused this situation.” His defense emphasizes a broader view of the geopolitical landscape rather than focusing solely on Trump’s presidency.
