Stephen A. Smith Critiques Newsom’s Comments on Trump
This week, commentator Stephen A. Smith took aim at California Governor Gavin Newsom for his remarks about President Donald Trump during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
On his podcast, “Straight Shooter,” Smith expressed that while it’s acceptable for Newsom to voice his opinions about Trump on U.S. soil, doing so while abroad presents a different issue. He stated, “I have no problem with Gavin Newsom speaking frankly and openly about his feelings about the president on American soil. But going to another country, like Switzerland, and speaking negatively about the president in front of other leaders? That’s where I draw the line.”
Smith questioned the rationale behind Newsom’s presence in Switzerland. He played a clip of Newsom criticizing Trump, emphasizing the inappropriateness of such comments when dealing with foreign leaders. According to Smith, it’s unacceptable for U.S. officials to oppose the president during international discussions.
“As a governor in the U.S., you can say whatever you want. That’s fine,” he argued, “But when you’re abroad, it’s a different story—America first.”
Smith acknowledged that his stance might seem overly simple to some, yet he insisted that simplicity has its place. His criticism of Newsom extends to the governor’s focus, suggesting that while he’s clearly targeting Trump, there are pressing issues in the U.S., particularly in California. “Don’t pretend these problems don’t exist,” he noted.
He highlighted concerns like affordability in California, expressing frustration over the state’s rising costs, pointing out that much of this occurred under Newsom’s leadership. “Affordability is a huge issue! It’s outrageous, and it happened on your watch,” Smith exclaimed.
Even with his criticisms, Smith admitted to having a personal liking for Newsom, believing that the governor genuinely cares and aims to do good. Yet, he feels that Newsom’s choice to disparage Trump on the world stage is misplaced. “It’s not right. You can do it, but it doesn’t reflect well,” he said. “I have issues with Trump too, but I wouldn’t air that abroad.”
Smith also pointed out that Newsom had declined multiple invitations to appear on his show, questioning why he avoids open dialogue. “What’s the hesitation? If you’re planning a run for president in 2028, it’s crucial to communicate with Californians and America as a whole,” he remarked.
In a related note, Newsom had recently accused foreign leaders of being overly submissive when facing Trump, suggesting they should have come prepared. He remarked, “That’s just pathetic,” reflecting on the leaders’ reactions at the WEF.
