Stephen A. Smith Critiques Knicks President Leon Rose’s Statement

Stephen A. Smith is expressing frustration with Knicks President Leon Rose’s remarks regarding the recent firing of Tom Thibodeau, describing them as “weak.”

On Tuesday, Smith stated, “I think New Yorkers should take issue with Leon Rose’s comments. He should step up, get in front of the microphone and answer the questions directly. Stop being evasive. This is what it means to be the president of the New York Knicks—communicating effectively with the media and explaining the decisions that are being made.”

Following Thibodeau’s unexpected dismissal, Rose indicated that the team’s main focus is on achieving success for fans.

Smith dismissed Rose’s statement, insisting he wants to see him publicly justify the decision to fire the coach who led the team to the brink of the NBA Finals, particularly after a significant trade that involved multiple draft picks for a player without All-Star accolades.

Since assuming his role in 2020, Rose has not held a solo press conference with independent media.

While Smith acknowledged Rose’s efforts, he remarked, “Leon Rose has done a commendable job. No one can argue that. Yet, there were decisions that could have been more strategically aligned to enhance the Knicks’ chances for a championship.”

The Knicks’ journey to the Eastern Conference Finals was their most significant achievement since their exit against the Pacers in 2000, with Thibodeau leading the team to the playoffs four times during his tenure.

Smith is calling for more transparency from both Rose and team owner James Dolan, pointing out, “This organization, under James Dolan, seems to avoid engaging with the media. They feel like they don’t owe anyone an explanation, especially since Knicks fans remain loyal to the team at Madison Square Garden. It’s apparent that Dolan and Rose don’t align, which only adds to the problem.”
