During a Town Hall event at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday night, commentator Stephen A. Smith left the stage out of frustration and empathy for a constituent. The man, who shared his struggles working two jobs to afford his child’s tuition dues amidst the government shutdown, clearly struck a chord with Smith.
Smith expressed his feelings, stating, “I don’t think Washington really grasps how frustrated we are. A young man mentioned he has to rush to his DoorDash job to support his daughter’s school fees while everyone else here is still getting paid.” His remarks came during a panel that featured NewsNation host Chris Cuomo, commentator Bill O’Reilly, and various lawmakers from both parties.
“This is what’s really happening,” Smith emphasized. “I’m not pointing fingers at you personally, but at the Washington system. Take it for what it’s worth; it’s the reason so many Americans feel furious about this situation. We can sit here and discuss all these issues while people are out there struggling.”
The individual, an air traffic controller from Dallas, explained that he took on DoorDash work to help with educational costs for his children. He also recalled working in the federal sector during previous shutdowns under both the Obama and Trump administrations.
Smith remarked, “There’s a government shutdown right now, and we commend someone who, despite being an air traffic controller, has to drive for DoorDash. We’re here talking about expenses, and he’s the only one not receiving a paycheck.” He then stated, “You know what? I need a break.” With visible irritation, Smith stepped off the stage but quickly returned to the discussion.
This Town Hall, led by Cuomo, included various notable current and former congressional representatives, like Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania), along with officials from the Trump administration, including border czar Tom Homan.
