Stephen A. Smith is confused by Kelly Stafford’s comments on a podcast that she dated her husband Matthew’s backup quarterback in college to make him jealous.
Kelly recently spoke about her early relationship with the Rams quarterback at the University of Georgia. “Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe” podcast. He then revealed that it wasn’t all smooth sailing, saying he ended up teaming up with Matthew’s backup and “pissing him off.”
“You all know that men have egos and that ego rules, so why do you forget that when it comes to your own man? If you’re Mrs. Stafford, why do you think it’s okay to go home after publicly revealing, ‘I had sex with his backup,'” Smith said. He spoke on the podcast“What advantage does your husband have with four children?”
ESPN star Smith said he met Kelly Stafford once and called her a “lovely lady.”
“I’m not trying to slander her character or anything like that. I in no way disrespect Matthew Stafford’s wife or anybody’s wife,” Smith continued. “I’m just trying to say, what makes you think that’s okay? Why would you do something like that?”
Kelly, a former Georgia cheerleader, said on the podcast that her relationship with Matthew, 36, “wasn’t all that cute” at first, but that she had made an elaborate plan to make their relationship stronger.
“I hated him and I loved him. I dated a reserve guy to piss him off, and it worked. He was a bad boy too. Matthew was a very sweet, Southern gentleman and all that,” Kelly said. “And the reserve guy was the complete opposite and it pissed him off.”
Kelly said Matthew and the unnamed backup lived in the same dorm room and that Matthew had seen her car parked outside.
“At one point, he was waiting and he followed me out to his car, and I was like, ‘Wow, it’s working,'” Kelly said on the podcast. “I was like, ‘Get out of the car,’ and he was like, ‘He’s not right for you,’ and I was like, ‘What? I can’t say that.'”
The couple married in 2015 and have four daughters together: seven-year-old twins Chandler and Sawyer, five-year-old Hunter and three-year-old Tyler.
Kelly underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2019.
