Stephen A. Smith and Josh Hart Exchange Words
Engaging in a debate with a well-known commentator can be tricky. I mean, they often have a platform right there to amplify their voice.
The ongoing tension between Stephen A. Smith and Josh Hart has now escalated, with Smith reacting to Hart’s earlier remarks about Mikal Bridges.
Are you following along so far?
Recently, during a broadcast, Smith labeled Hart a “part-time Knicks fan” and urged him to “shut up.”
“Did I comment on the New York Knicks in any meaningful way?” Smith questioned on his YouTube show. “First off, you really don’t know who I know. Secondly, you have no idea who talks to me. Lastly, you don’t even realize my connection to the people who sign your paychecks, Josh Hart.”
He went on, “Look, I may not have researched this thoroughly, and maybe it doesn’t matter, but I actually like Josh Hart. And just so you know, I like Mikal Bridges, too. He deserves his $150 million contract. What bothers me, though, is the seven picks that were sacrificed to acquire him.”
The massive cost associated with Bridges’ trade—five first-round picks, one pick swap, and a second-round pick—has fueled this back-and-forth between the media and athletes.
Hart explained to the media that he was defending Bridges, whose performance has faced scrutiny this season, and stressed that his former Villanova teammate is fulfilling his role.
Bridges’ numbers show he’s averaging 14.7 points this season, a drop from 17.6 last year, marking his lowest since the 2021-22 season.
Hart suggested, “Last year, he didn’t have to contribute much, and now it appears he has even less responsibility. Sure, he has some mental challenges to tackle, and some of us can help him with that. He sometimes gets unfairly criticized for simply doing what’s expected of him. If we were to ask him to shoot 15 times a game, he’d likely be efficient enough to do so. But that’s not the game plan.”
On his show, Smith declared, “I want Josh Hart to keep quiet. Just sit down. I only want to hear you speak when you’re actually playing. That’s not the situation with Mikal Bridges. You need to be more proactive.”
Smith continued, “Seven picks for a player who struggles to score 10 points per game? That’s just not acceptable. We know Mikal Bridges is talented, but, honestly, he’s in a rough patch right now. They brought you in with those assets for more than what we’re currently seeing.”
In response, Hart insisted that he’s a fan of Smith. He remarked, “For me, as a part-time Knicks fan, Stephen A. really should just be quiet. He hardly knows the team members.”
In defending his loyalty, Smith stated he’s been a Knicks supporter since he was three years old, well before Hart was even born.
“You’re saying you’re a Knicks fan now? Have you really always felt that way?”
Smith expressed his disappointment, noting that the Knicks haven’t won a championship since 1973 and that he remains unsatisfied.
Smith reiterated that his concerns were primarily about the resources spent rather than the individuals involved.
“Those are the assets you, Mikal Bridges, Jalen Brunson, and others could have combined to chase a championship together,” he stated.
