Concerns Over Trump’s Retaliation Against Sports Leagues
On his show, Stephen A. Smith expressed worries that President Donald Trump might be retaliating against sports leagues that have opposed him.
Recently, the FBI announced the arrests of Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat player Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones. These arrests are linked to an investigation into alleged Mafia-related illegal gambling activities. In a video, Smith suggested Trump has already targeted the NFL and could be turning his attention to the WNBA next.
Smith emphasized, “This is about the integrity of the league. This raises questions about their credibility. It makes things uncomfortable. Anyone who has to face consequences, so be it. Why? Because they came after him.” He firmly stated that this is about revenge and asserted, “I’m not taking sides; I’m just relaying what I know.”
He also mentioned the NFL’s decision to have Bad Bunny perform during halftime at the upcoming Super Bowl. Following this, Smith noted an announcement from the Department of Homeland Security stating they would be present at the Super Bowl to detain individuals as part of immigration enforcement.
Smith speculated that the FBI’s recent press conference serves as a caution to other sports leagues. He pointed out that the names involved in the investigation aren’t high-profile, mentioning those arrested, yet the urgency of the press conference was evident. “They’re making it clear that this signal could extend to the WNBA,” he remarked.
He further indicated that the current climate isn’t just about policies but also about the political implications surrounding Trump, suggesting that the threats against him fuel this dynamic. “He’s fully aware of the political game being played and sees it as a misuse of power,” Smith added, indicating that those who have challenged Trump could find themselves in the crosshairs.
