Support and Controversy Surround Sophie Cunningham

Stephen A. Smith has come to the defense of Sophie Cunningham following her recent comments regarding transgender athletes in sports. In an interview with ESPN that was published on Tuesday, Cunningham expressed her views on the topic while emphasizing a need to “protect the young girls in the locker room.” She clarified that she does not harbor hatred toward transgender athletes.

The situation escalated when Cunningham reinforced her stance during a press briefing on Wednesday, sparking discussions across the WNBA and the broader sporting community.

On his SiriusXM radio show, Smith supported Cunningham, asserting that she is “100 percent correct.” He raised a hypothetical scenario about an NBA player transitioning to the WNBA, questioning the implications of such a situation and emphasizing the importance of perspective in evaluating athletes.

“I support the LGBTQ+ community,” he mentioned, yet he underscored the necessity to consider the rights of biological women. He argued that creating a separate league for transgender athletes should not be viewed as unreasonable or naive.

Smith continued, highlighting a societal fear that prevents open dialogue on this subject. He believes that ignoring the inherent unfairness of men competing against women in sports is a disservice to female athletes. “Sophie Cunningham is 100% right!” he concluded.

Cunningham reiterated her thoughts during an interview before the Fever’s recent victory over the Sun, stating, “I think that’s common sense.” She expressed the importance of advocating for young girls in sports and maintained her commitment to these views, stressing that she doesn’t condone hate.

She remarked, “I pass on love; I don’t hate anyone. I believe there’s room for everyone here.” While advocating for inclusivity, Cunningham also highlighted the need to protect the rights of biological women.

In various online discussions, Cunningham has been labeled as “MAGA Barbie.” In response, she clarified her political stance, indicating that her beliefs are more nuanced than simply leaning to the right. “I’m right in the middle,” she explained, expressing agreement and disagreement with viewpoints from both sides.

On the court, Cunningham contributed eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal in the game against Connecticut on Wednesday. As the season progresses, she averages 9.3 points per game for the Fever, who stand at 17-10 heading into All-Star weekend.
