Stephen Colbert’s New Role in “Elsbeth” Amidst Talk Show Cancellation

In a recent twist, “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert portrayed a murdered talk show host in the detective series “Elsbeth.” This comes after he announced in July that CBS plans to cancel his show in the spring of 2026. The decision followed a legal settlement between the network and Donald Trump concerning an “election interference” lawsuit related to a 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.

This week, Colbert garnered attention for his appearance in the Season 3 premiere of “Elsbeth,” where he plays the host of “Way Late with Scotty Bristol,” who meets an untimely end at the hands of the executive producer.

According to IMDb, “Elsbeth” centers on “Elsbeth Tascioni, an unconventional lawyer who collaborates with the NYPD to track down elite criminals with her unique perspective.” There’s a certain irony in Colbert’s fictional fate reflecting his real-life show’s impending end.

Recent controversies in late-night television have included the cancellation of Colbert’s show and the temporary halt of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Some commentators suggest that showrunner Jonathan Tolins has drawn inspiration from current events for the series. However, it seems he penned the episode before Colbert’s cancellation announcement.

Carrie Preston, who plays the title role, remarked, “What they said to me was, ‘Wow, people would think the Elsbeth writers had the biggest balls in Hollywood.'” It appears that, while Colbert’s character faces a grim fate, he isn’t actually a direct reflection of the real-life host.

Preston elaborated, stating, “Scotty is neither kind nor as warm as Colbert… He’s quite different.” It’s this contrast that adds nuance to Colbert’s fictional representation compared to his actual persona.
