Colbert on 2028 Presidential Run: “Absolutely Not”
Stephen Colbert, the host of “The Late Show,” recently shared his thoughts on the possibility of running for president in 2028. When asked, he firmly stated that he “absolutely” should not pursue a presidential candidacy. “Yes, I should never run for president,” he remarked, acknowledging the curiosity surrounding the idea by saying, “I understand why you would want me to do that.”
In a hint of sarcasm, Colbert mentioned he might need to consult his family and religious leaders after the show to consider whether he should answer a “call to further serve this country.”
Theory on Show Cancellation
Colbert expressed some agreement with the notion that there could be political factors influencing his show’s cancellation. He described this theory as “rational,” and then made a grand declaration that America is “humanity’s last best hope.” He reflected on his commitment to the ideals of the Founding Fathers, suggesting that it’s a weighty matter whether he should run—implying a kind of valor in stepping into such a role, albeit with a touch of irony.
As he spoke, the audience began chanting his name, which might have been part of the entertaining atmosphere of the event. His fellow panelists—former CBS News anchor John Dickerson and New York Times writer Emily Bazelon—echoed Colbert’s sentiment. Bazelon went so far as to call the idea of him running “pathetic.”
Past Presidential Campaigns
This isn’t the first time Colbert has toyed with the idea of political candidacy. Back in 2007, he humorously attempted to run for president while in character on “The Colbert Report.” He even submitted paperwork to be on the ballot for the South Carolina Democratic Primary, but his application was ultimately rejected because the committee believed he wasn’t a serious contender.
The notion resurfaced in 2012 when he started a committee for another presidential run but missed the deadline to get on the ballot. His forays into mock campaigning added a layer of complexity to his public persona.
Upcoming Changes
During the same “Gabfest” event, Colbert shared a moment with Dickerson, who had just completed his final broadcast on “CBS Evening News.” In a playful gesture, after their hug, Colbert raised his middle finger, likely in jest.
In a related announcement, CBS revealed that the last episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” will air in May 2026. As the show draws closer to its end, discussions about Colbert’s future, both in entertainment and beyond, are likely to continue, keeping everyone guessing.
