Colbert Highlights Texas Gerrymandering to Illinois Governor

WASHINGTON – Stephen Colbert, the CBS late-night host, recently confronted Illinois Governor JB Pritzker about Texas Democrats allegedly manipulating their state boundaries. Colbert implied that the situation in Texas reflects attempts at gerrymandering by showcasing a peculiar map of Illinois during a segment on “The Late Show.”

In his discussion with Pritzker, Colbert pointed out one Illinois district, jokingly remarking that it resembled a “scorpion stinger.” He said, “If you’re thinking about redrawing districts in Illinois, just take a look at some of these already existing ones.” His playful approach continued as he demonstrated the odd shapes of certain districts, bringing attention to their convoluted boundaries.

Pritzker, who has previously indicated he might redraw congressional boundaries to favor Democratic candidates, responded affirmatively when asked if Illinois would adjust its districts in reaction to Texas changes. “That’s a possibility,” he commented, supporting the idea that adjustments might be necessary.

“Everything’s on the table,” Pritzker added, expressing a willingness to combat what he described as unconstitutional moves by Texas legislators. He emphasized the importance of responding strategically to maintain a balance in representation.

Rezoning typically happens every decade after census results, where state legislatures or independent bodies redraw congressional boundaries. Some states, such as Texas and North Carolina, have engaged in contentious sessions even before the official ten-year mark, leading to extensive legal disputes.

The historical practice of drawing political districts for partisan gain, termed gerrymandering, dates back to at least the early 19th century, linked to Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry’s infamous map.

Colbert playfully inquired if manipulating district lines was common across all states, to which Pritzker joked about handing the responsibility to children. Their conversation touched upon whether independent committees handle these tasks impartially.

Pritzker argued that Texas Republicans make efforts to redraw their districts at notable times, framing it as rare. Colbert added emphasis on the influence that Donald Trump reportedly has over Texas legislators regarding these changes.

In terms of representation, Illinois has 17 House members, three of whom are Republicans. Notably, Trump received around 43% of votes from Illinois in 2024, indicating that a fair map could potentially allow for more Republican representation.

Facing backlash, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued arrest warrants for lawmakers who left the state to evade voting, prompting calls from figures like Senator John Cornyn for federal intervention to bring them back.

Lastly, Trump suggested his involvement could help support Texas Republicans, claiming strong backing for Abbott’s efforts while discussing the potential for redistricting in other states as well.
