Stetson Bennett may not return next season.
The Rams' rookie quarterback left the team at the beginning of the 2023 season, with little explanation given as to the reasons behind his placement on the reserve/innocent football list.
During the season-ending press conference, Rams manager Sean McVay was asked if Bennett would return next season.
“I don't know that,” McVeigh told reporters. “I'd like to talk about that another time. I think he's getting better, but I'm not in a position to answer that exactly right now. It will be a long time coming.”
Bennett began the season as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Matthew Stafford.
The team promoted Brett Rypien to replace Bennett and ultimately signed Carson Wentz.
Bennett, 26, led Georgia to back-to-back national championships and the Rams selected him in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
His status in the draft was always in doubt because he was older than almost every other prospect.
Bennett got off to a good start in the preseason, throwing for 333 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in his first two games.
However, in the final preseason game against the Broncos, he threw two interceptions.
McVay said in late October that Bennett was “doing well,” but acknowledged it was unlikely he would return this season.
Georgia honored Bennett at halftime of a game against Ole Miss on Nov. 11, and Bennett appeared to be in good spirits.
Bennett was recognized for winning the Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the nation's top walk-on.
The Rams ended their season Sunday with a 24-23 loss to the Lions in the wild card round.
