Mets Owner Responds to Disappointed Fans
Steve Cohen, the owner of the New York Mets, addressed fans’ frustrations on Monday after the team endured a dismal collapse and missed out on the postseason.
In the season-ending game, the Miami Marlins dealt the final blow to the Mets, winning 4-0 on Sunday.
Cohen took to social media to express his sentiments: “Any Mets fans, we all feel the raw emotions today. We know how much time and effort you put into this team. The outcome was unacceptable. Your emotions tell us how much you care and motivate the organization to improve. We thank the best fans in the sport.”
Just moments after the defeat, first baseman Pete Alonso mentioned his plans to opt out of his contract and enter free agency. He reflected on the season, saying, “There are some great people in this clubhouse and on the staff. Every day was a joy to come to work and wear orange and blue. I was truly grateful, and honestly, filled with so much gratitude every day.”
The Mets had a promising start to the season, sitting at 45-24 on June 12—one of the best records in MLB. However, despite the hefty financial investment—with the team’s payroll at $341 million—it has not translated into success. They ended the season with an overall record of 83-79 after experiencing a series of crushing losses.
Despite an impressive beginning, the team struggled, notably ending August with an 11-17 record and September at 10-15. Their matchups against the Marlins were significant, but they only secured one win out of three games.
The Mets will need to reconsider their strategy as they turn their focus toward the offseason, starting earlier than they might have anticipated.
