Steve Hilton Launches CAL DOGE to Tackle Corruption in California

Steve Hilton, a Republican candidate for governor of California, is set to announce his initiative called CAL DOGE. This ambitious effort aims to uncover an estimated $250 billion in fraud and tackle corruption, as reported.

In remarks to the California Post, Hilton described the initiative as inspired by Elon Musk’s recently established Office for Government Efficiency, which was initiated under the Trump administration. He envisions CAL DOGE as a tool to challenge the Democratic-led governance in California, enhance transparency in state finances, and eliminate bureaucratic waste.

“It’s about accountability,” Hilton stated. “Californians endure the highest taxes in the nation, yet face the worst outcomes—extensive poverty and soaring housing costs, coupled with energy expenses. Meanwhile, there’s no clear accounting for how our tax dollars are spent. It’s not a coincidence that these issues coincide.”

The core aim of CAL DOGE is to identify possibilities for downsizing state institutions, removing bureaucratic hurdles that inflate costs, and cutting unnecessary roles. Additionally, Hilton proposed measures such as a hiring freeze, eliminating 50,000 state jobs, and reviewing contracts with 21 public sector unions.

Utilizing Musk’s AI tool Grok, Hilton created the branding for CAL DOGE and expressed his belief that California’s fraud issues surpass those encountered in Minnesota.

He criticized Democrats for their handling of the state budget, pointing out that Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced a hefty spending plan of $348.9 billion, a significant rise since 2019.

“This is the result of 16 years under a single-party rule,” he remarked. “We see corruption, fraud, and a political system that benefits insiders at the expense of hardworking Californians. CAL DOGE is intended to disrupt this cycle and replace it with accountability and reform.”

Jenny Ray Le Roux has been appointed as the director of CAL DOGE, joined by former military leader and federal officer Michael Koslow. The team also includes former Schwarzenegger administration member Paul Miner and San Diego activist Amy Reichert, known for her advocacy on government accountability.

“Fraud is obviously a problem,” Le Roux commented, adding that the excessive size of government is the root cause of such misconduct. “CAL DOGE will expose the issues and suggest real reforms to create a government that is smaller, simpler, and accountable.”

Around CAL DOGE, an advisory board will include Congressman Kevin Kiley, former judge Dan Kolke, State Senator Tony Strickland, biotech entrepreneur Homan Hemmati, alongside journalists Katie Grimes and Jennifer Van Laar. This committee will guide reform proposals and oversee the progress of initiatives.

CAL DOGE is also establishing a secure whistleblower platform where current and former state employees can report issues of fraud, waste, and mismanagement while remaining protected from retaliation.
