Steve Martin top pick to play Kamala Harris’ VP Tim Walz on ‘SNL’

Democracy has spoken.

Steve Martin is considered the perfect choice to play Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ recently announced running mate, on this fall’s “Saturday Night Live.”

On Tuesday, Waltz, 60, was announced as Harris’ running mate, and social media quickly became abuzz with comments about the physical similarities between Martin and Waltz.

Fans said on Twitter that they would like to see the 78-year-old Martin play a Democratic politician in the upcoming 50th season of “SNL,” which is scheduled to run through the 2024 presidential election.

“SNL call Steve Martin now,” it read. One Tweet The tweet was retweeted more than 9,000 times.

“Steve Martin will definitely do the Waltz on SNL.” Said Another fan.

A fourth fan joked: “Am I missing something or did Kamala Harris not pick comedian Steve Martin as her running mate?”

Another fan pointed out the similarities between Waltz’s Minnesota home and the house featured in Martin’s 1991 film “Father of the Bride.”

“Not only does Tim Waltz look like Steve Martin, but his house looks like the bride’s father’s house,” said a fan. Tweeted Includes photos of two houses.

The Washington Post has reached out to Martin and representatives for “SNL” for comment.

Martin has hosted “SNL” 16 times, one shy of tying Alec Baldwin’s record of 17 appearances.

Martin last hosted the show in December 2022 during season 48. He co-hosted with his “Only Murders in the Building” co-star Martin Short. Brandi Carlile was the musical guest.

Martin first appeared as host on the show during season two in 1976.

It was previously announced that Maya Rudolph will return to SNL for season 50 as the 59-year-old Harris.

Rudolph, 52, first played the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Harris on the Dec. 21, 2019 episode of Eddie Murphy’s “SNL,” for which she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

The NBC sketch comedy series’ next milestone season will premiere on September 28th.

Harris picked Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, setting the stage for a showdown in November between Donald Trump and running mate J.D. Vance.

“I am proud to have asked Tim Walz to be my running mate. As a governor, coach, teacher and veteran, he has dedicated his life to working families like his,” the vice president wrote in a post on X.

Walz called joining the Harris campaign “the honor of a lifetime” and vowed to be “all in.”

“Vice President Harris shows us what’s possible in politics. It reminds me a little of the first day of school: let’s get this done, guys!” Walz said in a statement.

Walz served 24 years in the Army National Guard, then served a mostly rural district in southern Minnesota as a U.S. representative for 10 years before running for governor in 2018.
