Market Correction Discussion

Josh Brown mentioned on Tuesday that there’s a correction happening in the stock market, even if the indices don’t show it just yet. Speaking on CNBC’s “Halftime Report,” he stated, “There’s actually a market-wide correction happening right now.” He pointed out that the reason many seem unaware is because the top tech stocks, specifically the “Mag7,” aren’t yet affected, but that’s what’s really going on.

While stocks are hovering near record highs, with the S&P 500 recently climbing above 6,900 for the first time, there’s more than meets the eye. The index has surged over 15% this year, but this significant rise has hidden some underlying weaknesses, causing concern among investors. Brown, who is the CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, highlighted that over 30% of the S&P 500 is currently more than 20% below its 52-week high, which indicates that many stocks are essentially in a bear market.

Additionally, he pointed out that 6.5% of the S&P 500 reached a 52-week low just on Tuesday. On that same day, the index dropped more than 1%, largely due to declines in AI stocks. Despite this, Brown remains optimistic about the overall market. He believes some excess needs to be wrung out to pave the way for a potential year-end bull market. “This is how a healthy bull market works,” he elaborated. “They suck that enthusiasm up from the top and reset it. I think that’s a good thing.” His outlook suggests that such adjustments are necessary for sustainable growth moving forward.
