Stockton mayor unharmed after gang gunfire hits her house overnight

Gunfire struck the home of Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi during a nearby shooting that authorities believe was gang-related. The mayor’s office confirmed the incident over the weekend, indicating that it wasn’t aimed at her personally or politically.

According to a spokesperson from the Stockton Police Department, officers responded shortly before 2 a.m. on October 18 to reports of shots fired. Two boys, aged 17 and 18, were found with gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening. Investigators later determined that a stray bullet from the same incident hit the mayor’s house.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Fugazi expressed concern over the incident while reassuring that her family remained safe. “This could have killed someone in my family, even myself,” she stated in an interview. Initially, she mistook the gunfire for fireworks, saying, “At first I thought it was fireworks because I heard pop, pop, pop,” until the police notified her of the actual situation.

Physical evidence like shell casings were discovered at the scene, confirming the shooting took place. Fugazi also reported seeing a hole in her window.

In a statement, she thanked the police for their swift response, praising their commitment to community safety, which she believes contributes to the nearly 50% drop in crime this year in Stockton.

“I never expected bullets to randomly come flying into my house, into my bedroom,” she reflected. “This shooting is a reminder that no one, regardless of position, is immune to crime’s impacts. It strengthens my resolve to make every neighborhood in Stockton safe for everyone.”

The police have not officially confirmed the identity of the shooting victims due to confidentiality concerns, though it’s acknowledged that the mayor resides there. Anyone with relevant information about the incident is encouraged to reach out to the Stockton Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
