Stony Brook’s Eric Pratt Suspended for Spitting Incident
Eric Pratt, a standout player for the Stony Brook men’s basketball team, has been suspended following an incident during a recent game where he spat at a fan. This occurred during the team’s 82-69 defeat to Monmouth.
The situation escalated with about two and a half minutes left in the game, as Pratt faced heckling from the crowd. Instead of letting it go, he responded by turning away and spitting in their direction before walking off the court.
Stony Brook’s Director of Athletics, Sean Heribron, addressed the matter in a statement, indicating that after consulting with the CAA, Pratt would not be participating in Saturday’s upcoming match against Hofstra.
“I spoke with Eric and he recognized his mistake, taking full responsibility for his actions. Emotions can run high during games, but he realizes that his behavior was not acceptable and doesn’t align with the standards we expect from our student-athletes and the values upheld by our department and institution,” Heribron noted. He added that Pratt is eager to learn from this experience and move forward positively.
At the time of his ejection, Pratt was having a strong game, leading his team with 14 points and eight assists. He is currently the top scorer for Stony Brook, averaging 19.4 points per game, making his absence from the Hofstra game quite significant.
Stony Brook is currently in a critical position, tied for the No. 5 seed in the CAA Tournament, and a loss against Hofstra could potentially jeopardize their seeding.
Interestingly, Pratt’s situation draws some parallels to another spitting controversy in sports last year, involving Philadelphia Eagles player Jalen Carter and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during an NFL game.
