Stringent Gun Control Fails to Stop Edmonton City Hall Firearm Attack

Canada's strict gun laws failed to stop a firearms and Molotov cocktail attack on Edmonton City Hall on Tuesday.

edmonton journal report The 28-year-old gunman was armed with a long gun when he “entered the building through the park, opened fire and threw Molotov cocktails,” police said. Some members of Congress were inside the building at the time of the attack and were taken to a safe location by police and security personnel.

The attack on Edmonton City Hall occurred despite Canada's strict gun laws.

These gun regulations include Ban Effective May 1, 2020, “More than 1,500 assault-style firearm models and certain components of some newly prohibited firearms (upper receivers for M16, AR-10, AR-15, and M4 pattern firearms) ” according to the Canadian government. And Canada had ammunition magazine regulations long before the “assault-style firearms” ban was adopted.

Licensing is a Canadian law and a firearms safety course is required to obtain a license to own a firearm. A license is also required to legally obtain and/or possess a firearm.

Canada requires extensive background checks for anyone looking to purchase a firearm.Plus, Ottawa City News report Starting July 7, 2021, Canada expanded the scope of background checks conducted to look at a prospective buyer's entire life, not just the past five years. At the same time, the Prime Minister announced that requirements for Canadian firearms retailers will be strengthened.

Canada also has a waiting period for gun purchases.

To buy a handgun, Canadians must prove they practiced at a licensed shooting club or range, or prove they are a gun collector. Anyone looking to purchase any type of firearm must complete a safety course and pass a written and practical exam.

Canadians must obtain two references, list the names of partners they have lived with within the past two years, and sign an application. They must then apply for a permit and wait a month for processing to begin. Next, buyers must pass a background check that takes into account criminal history, mental health, and history of domestic violence or assault.

Once approved, you will be able to purchase a gun. If it's a handgun, Canadians must register it with police before taking it home.

Despite these and many other gun restrictions, the 28-year-old attacker, who allegedly made a video specifically mentioning “genocide” in Gaza before the attack, fires into Edmonton City Hall on Tuesday I was able to do that.
