Student-Led Event At Biden’s College Criticized For Acknowledgment Of ‘Charlie Kirk’s Killer’

University of Delaware Network Faces Backlash Over Controversial Credit

The student-run television network at the University of Delaware (UD) recently found itself in hot water for including a phrase referring to “Charlie Kirk’s Killer” in the credits of a show. It seems this particular mention caught quite a bit of attention.

This network, managed by UD students, is known as STN49. Besides the controversial phrase, credits also included references to “Cocaine” and “Violence,” which perhaps isn’t what you’d typically expect. Nick Miles, Executive Director of the Delaware GOP, highlighted this on social media, though it was noted that the mention of Kirk was quickly removed.

Even after deletion, Miles shared an image showing the original credit on his account, pointing out how quickly things can escalate in the digital age.

The university later issued a statement clarifying their position, stating, “The University of Delaware unequivocally condemns the deeply offensive language that appeared in those rolling credits.” They indicated that concerns were raised almost immediately after the show aired, leading to a swift decision to remove the credits. It’s interesting, isn’t it, how quickly the perception of something can change once it goes live?

The administration emphasized their commitment to fostering an environment where respect and courtesy are paramount. This situation has prompted discussions about how free expression should balance with responsible communication within diverse communities.

There was further insistence that the program operates under faculty supervision, utilizing taxpayer resources efficiently. Gene Truono, the chair of the Delaware Republican Party, expressed his disappointment, reminiscing about a time when he believed courtesy and respect guided what was broadcast. He argued that the university owes it to its community to address the incident thoroughly to prevent such occurrences in the future.

Oh, and just as a side note: Kirk is the founder of Turning Point USA and, tragically, was shot during a speech at Utah Valley University back in September, which drew mixed reactions nationally from students and staff regarding the incident.

It leaves one wondering about the boundaries and expectations in academic environments and how they’re navigated—perhaps that’s a conversation worth having.
