Students at ODU subdue shooter in incident that resulted in the death of an ROTC instructor

ODU Shooting Incident: A Tragic Event Unfolds

A shooting at Old Dominion University (ODU) left one person dead and two others injured. A group of students intervened and disarmed the suspect, drawing praise for their bravery during the chaos.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Mohamed Bayler Jallow, a former soldier in the Army National Guard, reportedly shouted “Allah Akbar” while opening fire in a classroom. Previously convicted for supporting ISIS, Jallow’s actions have prompted an FBI investigation into the incident as an act of terrorism.

FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the quick response of students was crucial. “The gunman died due to the intervention of a group of brave students, who, along with law enforcement, undoubtedly saved lives,” he said.

ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton confirmed that Jallow was pronounced dead at the scene, although details surrounding his death remain unclear. “The brave ROTC members in that room confronted him and subdued him,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Dominic Evans, emphasizing the potential danger had they not acted.

The victim has been identified as Lt. Col. Brandon Sher, a dedicated ROTC instructor. Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger expressed her grief, praising Sher’s commitment to service and the impact he had on his students. “I am grateful for his example, deeply saddened by his loss, and praying for his family,” she remarked.

Among the injured, one victim was taken to a local hospital, while the other managed to drive himself to seek treatment. Both individuals are currently reported to be in stable condition.

Sources have disclosed that Jallow had a prior conviction in 2017 for providing material support to ISIS, after which he was released in 2024. Originally from Sierra Leone, he served in the Virginia National Guard but had distanced himself from the military after encountering radical ideologies online.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Patel stated that the FBI is collaborating with local law enforcement to gather more information, promising updates as they become available.

In the wake of the incident, ODU has suspended classes and activated counseling services for students and staff. ODU President Brian Hemphill reassured the community of their commitment to safety, stating, “The safety of our campus community is my top priority. We take this responsibility very seriously.” He expressed condolences for those affected by the tragedy.
