High School Student Advocates for Girls’ Sports in Washington

A student from Wenatchee High School made waves on social media recently by delivering a speech emphasizing the need for schools in Washington state to support girls’ sports. Sadie Sullivan, a swimmer, stated during her address at Garden City Academy, “Girls should never feel uncomfortable in their locker room.”

This speech occurred at a Super Signer Rally Event hosted by Let’s Go Washington, aimed at backing two ballot initiatives. One initiative seeks to enhance parental communication with schools, allowing parents to review educational materials and student records. The second initiative focuses on maintaining “biologically male” participants in women’s sports.

Earlier this year, Washington state had passed a bill that restricted parental rights, which included stipulations requiring parents to be notified before their children receive non-emergency medical services in schools.

In her speech, Sullivan insisted that “Girls should never be told that their feelings don’t matter.” She continued, “They shouldn’t feel pressured to undress around boys, nor should they have to compromise their safety for the comfort of others.”

Another student, Arnalee Wilson from Eastmont High School, expressed criticism toward Democratic Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and State Superintendent Chris Reykdal. She remarked, “You’ve stood up for transgender athletes, but you haven’t stood up for us. We matter too.” Wilson asserted that both she and her peers deserve safety and respect in their sports environments.

Wilson went on to tell Reykdal, “We are not ‘thriving’ with boys in the locker room and on the field. When we say ‘all’ students, it’s vital to remember that ‘all’ includes biological girls as well.”

Darren Littell, the campaign manager for Let’s Go Washington, commented on the rally’s momentum, stating that it has shown how courage spreads. “The support we see is inspiring,” he said, adding that many were previously hesitant to voice their concerns against prevailing opinions. “But now, it feels like the fear has been shattered. People understand that girls deserve fair competition and a safe space for preparation.” He emphasized the group’s commitment to safeguarding girls’ rights in sports.

Littell also mentioned that there’s about a month left to gather signatures for the initiatives aimed at restoring parental rights and protecting women’s sports. He encouraged registered voters in Washington state to participate.

Katie Payne, the chief communications officer for the Washington State Department of Public Instruction, noted, “Washington state law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity or expression in public schools,” further stating that all students should have access to facilities aligning with their gender identity. She assured that the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction is responsible for enforcing these laws.
