Underage Drinking Rampant in Oxford, MS

In Oxford, Mississippi—a lively college town known for its bustling nightlife—underage drinking appears to be a widespread issue. Reagan Fiser, a bartender who’s been part of the local scene for nearly seven years, says, “It’s rampant for sure.” This sentiment reflects the experiences of many students and bar employees who describe a culture where underage Ole Miss students frequently find ways to sneak into bars around “The Square.”

The Square itself is famous for its historic shops and lively drinking spots, located conveniently just a mile from the University of Mississippi’s campus. An extensive inquiry, which involved interviews with over 30 students and venue staff, highlighted the prevalence of underage drinking, revealing various methods students use to bypass age restrictions, including fake IDs and sharing identifications.

City Officials Address Concerns

Local officials, including Oxford’s Mayor Robyn Tannehill and Police Chief Jeff McCutchen, have acknowledged the serious nature of underage drinking, fake IDs, and illegal drug use in the area. In a statement, they admitted, “We are not suggesting that underage drinking, fake identification, illegal drugs or other safety concerns do not exist in Oxford.” The police report indicates significant numbers, such as 759 fake IDs confiscated and 378 incidents involving minors in possession of alcohol.

The Culture of Underage Drinking

Underage drinking isn’t a secret at Ole Miss—it’s practically part of campus life. One sophomore noted the easy accessibility of fake IDs, connecting it to a broader culture that includes everyone, whether they belong to a sorority or fraternity. “I think it’s everyone… like every student,” she said. Fiser added that certain bars cater to older students, while those that allow entrance for those over 18 attract a younger crowd.

Despite measures like marking young patrons with stamps, many say enforcement wanes in crowded environments. Bartenders revealed many places serve underaged customers regularly, often offering cheap drinks that create a chaotic atmosphere. “Their whole concept is like cheap drinks… That feels a little sticky,” said Fiser.

ID Sharing and Loopholes

Getting past security often involves simple tricks, including sharing IDs among friends. Fiser recounted witnessing instances where patrons would effortlessly pass the same fake ID back and forth, as bouncers sometimes fail to notice. One bouncer, Haj Bah, confirmed he caught individuals trying to share identifications, emphasizing the challenge of maintaining order and safety.

A first-year student noted that while gaining access to bars can be easy with a fake ID, venue owners shouldn’t be solely blamed for the situation. “The bars here are very strict, but if you have a fake ID… it’s gonna happen though, right?” he argued, indicating a recognition of the ongoing issue despite awareness of the rules.

Drug Use Concerns

Beyond just underage drinking, there are rising worries about illicit drug use among students. Several anonymous reports came from students who claimed to have seen drug use at fraternity events, which some bartenders confirmed can inevitably spill into local bars later in the night.

City Enforcement Statistics

In light of these findings, Mayor Tannehill and Chief McCutchen addressed the critical need for vigilant enforcement regarding underage drinking and safety in the area. The Oxford police detailed their efforts, highlighting their active role in checking establishments and enforcing the laws surrounding alcohol consumption.

McCutchen conveyed the proactive approach taken, reporting on extensive checks and the confiscation of numerous fake IDs over the past year. “Our responsibility is to evaluate concerns based on reported incidents, current trends, investigations, enforcement activity and the evidence available to us,” he stated.

The continuing dialogue highlights the complex dynamics between students, local venues, and city officials, illustrating how a vibrant nightlife can also conceal troubling behaviors.
