UNC Students Disrupt Charlie Kirk Tribute

At the University of North Carolina Wilmington, a memorial for Charlie Kirk was marred by student protests. Recently, students opposing Kirk allegedly harassed others who had gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor him.

A video from the event showed one student mocking Kirk’s supporters while approaching a large rock painted in his memory. The scene unfolded with comments like, “Can someone be a writer?”, and another student asserting “free speech.” When Kirk’s supporters offered statements like “Jesus loves you,” one of the protestors pointed to a sweatshirt that appeared to feature the image of the devil.

Regrettably, the tension continued. The day after the vigil, a separate video captured students covering the memorial rock with paint. Reagan Faulkner, president of the UNCW University Republican Chapter, shared that they had planned for about 250 attendees but were surprised when the turnout reached between 750 and 1,000.

Faulkner described the vigil as “beautiful,” adding, “I absolutely honored Charlie in a great way.” On Tuesday morning, tensions escalated as students opposed to Kirk’s memorial began threatening to alter the decoration by painting over it. Faulkner noted that the rock was defaced around 11 AM.

Despite attempts to keep the peace, confrontations occurred. Faulkner mentioned being “body checked,” and police on site determined that the altercations did not rise to a level warranting arrests. The university later commented on the situation, indicating that while discussions began amicably, tensions flared as opposing students clashed over the rock’s decoration.

“Some students attempted to intervene, but in doing so, they got covered in paint,” the statement explained. It also underscored the university’s commitment to freedom of expression, while inviting students to address any concerns directly with the campus police.

Faulkner, also the secretary for UNCW’s Turning Point USA Chapter, expressed frustration over the university’s response, calling for more protective measures for conservative students. Her group opted to shift their approach, focusing on prayer and music instead of confrontation.

Another student lamented the situation, feeling that the school should take stronger action against harassment. “Many students are upset, and while we feel anger, we also mourn for those lost souls,” he stated, emphasizing the need for the university to address violent behavior against conservative students.

Across the nation, conservative groups have rallied in remembrance of Kirk, staging vigils to honor his legacy. In parallel, the discourse online among conservatives has highlighted a troubling sentiment among some students and staff suggesting Kirk deserved his fate.
