Accusations Against Saks Fifth Avenue Stylist

A well-known stylist at Saks Fifth Avenue, recognized for his ties to Boston’s elite, faces allegations of stealing around $430,000 in merchandise from the upscale retailer.

Suhail Kwatra, 43, who brands himself as the “Boston fashion whisperer,” claims to have styled prominent clients, including the wife of Red Sox legend David Ortiz. He denies the accusations that he orchestrated fraudulent returns for high-value items that customers supposedly ordered but never received.

Kwatra, a graduate of the New York State Fashion Institute of Technology, allegedly converted those refunds into gift cards to purchase personal items.

Court records indicate that he misused promotional cards, distributed merchandise without payment, and improperly used company credit cards.

The total loss to Saks amounted to $429,400, according to company reports.

Kwatra, dubbed “Boston’s finest socialite stylist” by Boston Magazine, firmly denies the charges.

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, he asserted, “I have always strived to abide by company policies and provide the best service to my customers.”

His attorney, Jennifer Furey, argues that the charges are a form of retaliation after Kwatra declined Saks’ recent offer to stay with the company. “Less than two months later, Saks offered Mr. Kwatra a significant consolation bonus if he remained with Saks,” she stated.

Furey implied that accusations arose as Kwatra was considering an offer from another global retailer. After he rejected it, Saks allegedly launched unfounded claims against him.

Boston police were alerted to the alleged fraud last month when store staff at the Prudential Center noticed suspicious activity, leading to an internal investigation that resulted in Kwatra’s termination.

The retailer reportedly showcased images on social media of Kwatra wearing items he allegedly stole.

According to police, Kwatra submitted a handwritten letter apologizing, admitting to the fraud, and pledging to repay the stolen amount.

Furey countered that her client had faced coercion during the interview leading to his dismissal and claimed that the company was attempting to cover up internal control issues alongside Kwatra’s decision to seek employment elsewhere after rejecting a retention bonus.

Furey emphasized that Kwatra had been a highly successful personal stylist, generating significant business for Saks.

Kwatra himself described his work on his website, stating, “As a fashion stylist and consultant, I specialize in carefully selected, high-impact wardrobe solutions tailored for people who expect excellence.” He added, “I don’t follow trends; I edit trends. Clients come to me for clarity, confidence, and a wardrobe that speaks before it becomes a trend. If you’re looking for something ordinary, you’re in the wrong place.”

The Post has sought commentary from both Saks and Kwatra regarding the situation.
