Medicaid Renewal Denials Explained in Kentucky
Officials from the Kentucky Department of Medicaid Services have shed light on the recent Medicaid renewal denials affecting children enrolled in family and community-based services (HCBS) waivers.
In communication directed at the families involved, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services acknowledged that issues related to subcontractors had come to light.
“This situation might have resulted in some children being incorrectly denied the HCBS exemption service during their annual review,” the correspondence indicated.
Background
- Family members facing challenges in securing Medicaid compensation after unexpected denial.
As of May 15, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services is revisiting all cases of children who faced denials since the start of the year, although the specific number of affected cases hasn’t been disclosed.
The department intends to reinstate the denied exemption services for children until the reviewing process is finalized. Families who are currently contesting a child’s denial will maintain access to Medicaid services until the appeals are resolved.
“We are collaborating with contractors to reassess how eligibility criteria have been applied and are instituting new measures to prevent similar issues in the future,” the letter stated.
