Florida AG Issues Subpoena Over Illegal Trucking License

On Thursday, Florida Attorney General James Usmier announced he would be issuing both civil and criminal subpoenas to the employer of Harjinder Singh, who stands accused of making illegal U-turns while driving a truck in Florida.

Authorities allege that Singh acquired a commercial driver’s license in California unlawfully and is currently facing three counts of vehicular homicide. This stems from a crash he was involved in on the Florida Turnpike in Fort Pierce on August 12th.

During the incident, it appears Singh attempted to make a U-turn in an unauthorized area. His trailer then reportedly detached and collided with a minivan, resulting in the deaths of all three individuals inside the van, according to officials.

Singh was apprehended in Stockton, California, before being extradited to Florida to face the charges against him.

Investigation Launched into Trucking Licenses for Undocumented Immigrants

Uthmeier stated during a press conference that his office would be investigating Singh’s employer, White Hawk Carrier. He expressed concern about Singh’s ability to drive safely, mentioning that he reportedly couldn’t speak English and struggled with reading road signs. Uthmeier raised questions about how someone with such a lack of skills obtained a commercial license.

He elaborated that requests for information have been sent to authorities in California and Washington to gather more details on Singh’s licensing process.

Interestingly, back in 2013, California enacted a law that allows residents, regardless of their immigration status, to obtain driver’s licenses.

The investigation highlights ongoing concerns about road safety and regulatory practices regarding licensing for undocumented immigrants in the trucking industry.
