Fans are left wanting just a bit from Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe following their surprising breakup announcement.
And it seems that’s enough for many of them.
The well-loved pair shared their breakup through a joint statement on Friday. In the wake of this news, they also confirmed that their podcast, “A Touch More,” will continue for a bit longer, but with a new format.
Instead of co-hosting, Bird and Rapinoe will each lead separate shows for the next six episodes.
“We’re not going to do this together every week,” Rapinoe mentioned in a video on Instagram. “It’s sad to lose this space because it means so much to us, especially now that we’re retired. We really wanted to share this space, together and with you.”
“We’re not disappearing,” Bird added. “We’re just making a small adjustment, hosting six more special episodes of ‘A Touch More.’ That’s our way of saying goodbye to you and this chapter.”
The couple, who had been together for over ten years, began their podcast during the COVID-19 pandemic on Instagram before teaming up with Vox Media in 2024. Their first episode with the company aired during the Paris Olympics, featuring the recently retired Candace Parker.
They assured fans that their solo projects will keep moving forward even after “A Touch More” concludes.
Bird, a Hall of Famer and four-time WNBA champion, will continue her podcast, Bird’s Eye View, which focuses on the WNBA. She’s also set to join NBC and Peacock as a studio analyst next season.
On her end, Rapinoe is carving out her own path.
The two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion is planning to host a special edition of “A Touch More” during this summer’s World Cup when the United States will be the host nation. She hinted at launching her own show later in the summer as well.
“I want everyone to know we’re handling this with a lot of care,” Rapinoe stated. “We made this decision together. We will still be there for each other and for you, just in a different way.”
“We are really evolving into something new, for ourselves and for you all. Thank you for sharing this journey with us and allowing us to rediscover ourselves through this podcast,” she added.
“We are genuinely grateful and hope you’ll join us for this new chapter,” Bird wrapped up.
The pair first met at the 2016 Rio Olympics while representing their teams in Seattle. They officially announced their relationship in July 2017 and got engaged in October 2020.
